Following the Conference, Trotsky left for a Caucasian retreat to recuperate from his delayed sickness. On his way, he found out about Lenin's passing on 21 January 1924. He was going to return when a subsequent wire from Stalin showed up, giving an off base date of the booked burial service, which would have made it unthinkable for Trotsky to return in time. Numerous reporters theorized sometime later that Trotsky's nonappearance from Moscow in the days following Lenin's demise added to his inevitable misfortune to Stalin, in spite of the fact that Trotsky by and large limited the noteworthiness of his absence.
